Hikes of Madeira!
Madeira offers an endless array of hiking opportunities, from short walks through banana plantations to coastal and mountain trails, or deep into lush forests, and the famous levadas.
Pico do Arieiro
This is one of Madeira's highest peaks and offers an incredible hiking experience with breathtaking views. The adventurous hike between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo takes you through stunning landscapes, ridges, and tunnels. While the hike isn't very long, be prepared for significant elevation changes and steep sections, both with and without stairs. The trail is well-marked and challenging but totally worth it! If you're not up for the whole hike, even walking the first part provides spectacular views. Don't forget water, food, and sunscreen.
For a special experience, start early and catch the sunrise – it's amazing! Whether you tackle the entire route or just part of it, Pico do Arieiro is a must-see for anyone visiting Madeira. Bring your camera, comfy shoes, and an open mind – the scenery will impress you!
Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço
Located at the easternmost point of Madeira, this hike takes you along dramatic cliffs with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The volcanic formations and unique landscape make this 8 km round-trip trail a great option for most people, with some climbs along the way.
You can pause at Casa do Sardinha at the end of the trail for a snack and to take in the views, and swim. https://casadosardinha.com/
If you don't want to walk back, there's an option to take a boat from Baía d'Abra for a relaxing and scenic finish to your hike.

The Boca do Risco hike
The Boca do Risco hike is a fantastic short hike along the high cliffs of Madeira's coastline. It's a very easy walk on a mostly flat path with occasional steep drops by your side. The cliffs, several hundred feet high, are covered with various plant species. These green cliffs create an amazing color combination with the deep blue sea, and the views will make you understand why Madeira is sometimes called the "Hawaii of Europe." The trail is often pleasantly quiet, making it a perfect alternative to the busy hiking routes!
Levada do Moinho & Levada Nova
For those looking to explore the famous levadas of Madeira, this combined circular route takes you through lush forests, valleys, and alongside ancient water channels. Starting with Levada do Moinho, which offers wide paths and stunning views of the landscape, you'll pass waterfalls and experience Madeira's rich flora. Midway, switch to Levada Nova, which sits higher up and offers even more spectacular views of the coast and mountains. Be prepared for short tunnels and narrow paths, so a small flashlight and caution are recommended. The highlight is a beautiful waterfall, perfect for a break and some great photos.

Levada do Rei
This popular levada trail starts in São Jorge and takes you through lush laurel forests, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 10 km round trip is easy, scenic, and ideal for hikers of all levels, with simple paths along the water channel. You'll pass through rich vegetation, small streams, and end with an impressive waterfall. Be sure to wear good hiking shoes, as the trail can be slippery.
Vereda do Larano
This coastal hike between Porto da Cruz and Machico offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and towering cliffs. The 13 km trail takes you through lush vegetation, forests, and along cliffs, offering fantastic panoramic views. The trail can be tricky in parts, with narrow paths and steep drops, so caution and good hiking shoes are necessary. Avoid this hike if it's wet, as the trail can get dangerously slippery. For adventurous hikers, this is a great way to experience Madeira's coastal beauty.
